Efficient energy use

Energy Performance Certificates

Since 2008, Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) have been legally required for any commercial building over 50 m2 when it is built, sold or rented. The certificate is valid for 10 years and must be accompanied by any recommendations report. The revelations report should include references to the existing recognised benchmarks, with suggestions on cost-effective measures to improve energy performance.

Energy Surveys

For the most part, an energy survey of a building will be required to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption costs and increase energy efficiency in the building fabric, building services and equipment.

How to Write an Energy Policy

In order to know how to write an energy policy you must first identify what it is that your organisation wants to achieve from the policy document.

Developing an Energy Policy

An energy policy should add structure to an organisation's ambitions to improve energy management, increased energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption and costs.

Energy policy

An energy policy is often the first step that any organisation should take when developing an energy management system.

Green Building Design

Green building design should take a holistic approach and include the building envelope, the climate, building services, and human factors.Green building design should adopt a top-down approach that considers the overall design intent before implementing any individual measures.

Building Services

When considering the building services energy efficiency should look at areas such as the type and size of the system to be employed, planned controls and efficiency, fuels and operating regime.

Building Envelope

Energy Efficiency in Building Services

energy efficiency in building services is essentially achieved by minimising the requirement for the building services and in doing so minimising the energy consumed. In a cold climate energy efficiency can be achieved by optimising heat gains through careful orientation of the building and by using suitable technologies in the construction of the building. Insulation and heat recovery should ensure that where heat is generated to warm a building it is not lost rapidly to be external environment.
